A selection of presentations by international teachers, practitioners and scholars exploring aspects of Stanislavsky’s work in relation to how we train performers for working on screen.

Biographies

Evi Stamatiou, PhD, s a practitioner-researcher of actor training. She is a Senior Lecturer in Acting for Stage and Screen at the University of East London. She has a PhD from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is chair of the Acting Program at the Association for Theater in Higher Education and co-convener of the Performer Training Focus Group at the Theatre and Performance Research Association. She has published in academic books and journals. Recent publications include Bourdieu in the Studio: Towards Decolonising and Decentering acting training (2023), and Critical Acting Pedagogy: Intersectional Approaches (2024, co-edited with Lisa Peck).  

Paul Fryer, PhD, is an experienced Editor, Author and Researcher with a demonstrated history of working in the publishing industry. Skilled in Lecturing/Tutoring/Mentoring. Strong creative arts professional with an MA in Drama from University of London, and a PhD focused in Opera and Film from The University of Manchester. I hold visiting professorships at The Universities of Leeds, London South Bank University and University of East London. Co-Director of the Stanislavsky Research Centre, Co-Convener of The S Word research project, and Series editor of Stanislavsky And... (Routledge Taylor and Francis). Most recent books - Viktor Simov, Stanislavsky's Designer (Routledge Taylor & Francis) and Clive Barker and His Legacy (Methuen/Bloomsbury). New book, Victorian Blockbusters (McFarland), Spring 2024.

 

Tamur Tohver trained as a director and an actor. He is a practitioner with a laboratory approach and a self-cultivation coach. He has given workshops, taught performing arts in universities internationally, and made productions with theatre, broadcasting and film companies for over forty decades. Tamur's academic-artistic research has pioneered the actor-director exchange, self-cultivating performer training, and consciousness in performance. In 2020, he introduced the Zero Zone self-cultivation praxis, a tool designed to enhance the actor-director dyad, prevent stage fright, and foster immediate connections between performers and spectators.  Tamur is a Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) PhD candidate.

Michaela Antoniou, PhD, is a practitioner-researcher of directing and actor training, author and Laboratory Teaching Staff, on acting – theory and praxis – at the Department of Theatre Studies, NKUA. She has worked as a director in Greece and abroad. She has been writing for the stage since 2009 and she has published two novels. She has contributed to academic books and journals, conferences and symposia in Greece and abroad. Associate Editor of the Stanislavsky Studies (Routledge, Taylor & Francis). Her book Centrifugal Narratives will be published in 2024 by Papazisis Editions. She is editor, with Julian Jones, of Stanislavsky and Emotion for the Stanislavsky and... series, Routledge

Magdalene Remoundou is a Greek-based Film and TV Director with more than three decades of experience. Her latest documentary Who is Eugenio Barba (2020) won awards in numerous international film festivals. She is the Dean of Faculty of Culture & Communication at Metropolitan College in Athens and the Programme Leader of the BA Media Production/ Film Directing. She is a member of the Greek Directors Guild: Theatre- Film- Television, a Member of European and International Federation of Directors, a Member of Hellenic Film Academy, and a Member of the Greek Documentary Association. She is an accredited tutor and official examiner of Greek Ministry of Education for Film and TV directing and Production - General Examinations.


Adonis Galeos has translated and adapted 160 plays for the professional theatre. He works as a director, dramaturg, and intimacy coordinator. He is the programme leader of MA Acting (Metropolitan College/ University of East London), and he also teaches History of Acting and Literary Studies at Technon 100, and the Athens Conservatory of Dramatic Art. His research is into the interrelation of Rhetorical studies and Actor Training and the Theatre Rehearsal. He is completing his Practice as Research Phd in Rhetorical Acting at the University of Athens. He collaborated as the Head of Dramaturgical Research for the Opening Ceremony of the Athens Olympics. 

​Madison Scholl is a seasoned theater professional with an MFA in Acting from the University of East London and a BA in Theatre and Spanish from Concordia College. With a rich background in acting, production management, and event coordination, Madison has made significant contributions to the arts both in educational settings and professional productions. Recently, Madison co-hosted the Stanislavsky for the Film Actor webinar conference in London, and guided adolescents through a 10-week program focused on developing acting, improvisation, and stage presence skills. Her acting credits include performances in "Unquiet Mind" and "Platypus" at Camden People’s Theatre, "Double Exposure" with Mandi Films, and several roles at the University of East London and Concordia College. In addition to her acting career, Madison has served as a Production Manager for Boris Akunin's Hamlet at the London Marylebone Theatre, excelling in casting coordination, rehearsal management, and technical support. As an Assistant Lecturer at the University of East London, she provided instructional support, facilitated workshops, and mentored students.

 

Sharon Marie Carnicke , PhD, is best known for her groundbreaking study, Stanislavsky in Focus. Her other books include the recent Dynamic Acting through Active Analysis, Anton Chekhov: 4 Plays and 3 Jokes, and Checking out Chekhov. She has also published widely on screen performance and co-authored Reframing Screen Performance with Cynthia Baron. As a teacher of acting, she has conducted many intensive workshops on Active Analysis in the US, Europe, and Scandinavia. She is currently Professor of Dramatic Arts and Slavic Studies at the University of Southern California and founder of the Stanislavsky Institute for the 21st century.

 

Joelle Ré Arp-Dunham, PhD, MFA, is a director, actor, consent and intimacy professional, and educator in both theatre and film. Her primary scholarly and embodied interests include how the cognitive sciences may lead to new pedagogical strategies in directing and acting that help create safer, braver and more creative spaces for the entire production team. She has taught film and acting classes at the University of Georgia, SUNY Stony Brook, Radford University and currently at Kansas State University. She served as the Producing Artistic Director of the Circle Ensemble Theatre Company for 8 years, has directed over 50 productions and acted throughout the east coast.

 

Keith Day is a dedicated actor based in Philadelphia and a professional pilot, who flies to LA every week to work on Active Analysis.

 

Grigor Panosyan is an LA based actor, who began with improvisation as a member of Impro Theatre Conservatory. He focuses on stage performance.  

 

Trevor Rawlins is the Head of Subject for Theatre Arts at Falmouth University. Prior to that, he was Head of Acting and Performance at the University of Surrey (GSA). His research has been mostly focussed on screen applications for actor/performer training. He currently teaches screen acting at Falmouth.

Rebecca Reeves is a director, researcher, and lecturer. She holds a PhD in actor-training and European Theatre practices from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and her research explores pedagogical approaches to working with actors in experimental and postdramatic theatre-making. Rebecca has devised and directed original work for over ten years, and regularly teaches in conservatoire and university settings in the UK.

Darren Daly , PhD, a practitioner-researcher and lecturer in actor training for stage and screen. Before lecturing he worked as a professional actor across stage, screen and digital media for 20 years. He has taught and lectured in acting and performance at a variety of Higher Education Institutions across the UK and is currently the Programme Leader for the MA in Screen Acting at the University of Salford. His research interests focus on contemporary actor training for screen and digital media.

Lisa Loving Dalton, cofounder/Certifying Master Teacher of the National Michael Chekhov Association with Mala Powers and Wil Kilroy since 1993, has taught and performed in Nepal, Israel, London, Berlin, Brussels, Milan and Barcelona.  Dalton created the PBS documentary on Michael Chekhov, From Russia to Hollywood; authored The Michael Chekhov Technique Playbook, Murder of Talent with foreword by Dr. Sharon Marie Carnicke, and Falling for the Stars: A Stunt Gal’s Tattle Tales. Contributions include Chekhov and Meisner, Acting for Alternative Staging and various other publications. She made her living on-camera as an actor/comedienne/stunt woman in Hollywood, New York, Texas for 40+ years. www.chekhov.net
